Portion Control

May 31st, 2008

Yup, I’ve been doing a good job of watching what I eat and controlling my food portions and calorie intake.  I only started last Monday and it looks like I finally got my mojo back.  And not once did I ever consider taking Leptovox!  I’m old school when it comes to losing weight. ;)   You can only imagine how terribly hard it is to look at and write about food when I’m on a mission to lose weight and not want to have anything to do with food.  Hee hee.  But I love food, always have and always will.  So on with the show. :D

Revisiting Seasons

May 31st, 2008

Seasons is the premiere buffet restaurant of The Manila Pavilion Hotel.  We had the chance to dine there in February last year a few days before Hubby left for the US.  I wrote all about it HERE.  However, I didn’t post photos within the entry.  It’s been a while since we’ve had a decent buffet…buffet as we know it from back home.  So join me as I torture myself with photos of what I look forward to having when we come home for a vacation…

Seasons doesn’t have a very extensive selection of fresh seafood.  But as long as there are shrimps, I won’t really complain. ;)

This is Oscar. :)  He was in charge of all the cooking at the seafood station.  He made us very yummy tempura and if I remember correctly, he also made me some shrimps in garlic and butter.

Kebabs overload!  Oh why did I ever stop eating beef and pork? :D

Cookies and assorted chocolate goodies to tickle the kids’ tastebuds…and those of the kids at heart, too! ;)  You bet I was tickled silly.  Hee hee!

This is the part of any buffet spread which I will most likely skip so I can have room for the “dessert heavy weights”…heavy in sugar and heavy in calories.

The Halo-halo station.  That time, I skipped this one, too.

This is Melvin.  He made me my favorite buffet dessert of banana caramel crepe topped with vanilla ice cream.  *sigh*

The next two photos are of terrible quality but I just wish to show you how dessert was so beautifully presented…

Isn’t that the prettiest flan ever?

And here are more uniquely plated desserts .  I can no longer recall what these are exactly but I’m guessing sans rival, chocolate mousse and strawberry cheesecake.

By looking at these pics alone, I think I’ve gained a few pounds already!  It looks like I’ll have to invite hubby to join me hit the treadmills at the gym tomorrow.  *cross fingers*

PH #12: Self

May 31st, 2008

Interesting theme for this week’s photo hunt…”Self”. :D  I have a lot of photos of myself on this site so there’s no reason why I should be, er, shy about showing myself.  Hee hee.  I chose to post the very same pic found on my “About Page” :

This was taken at the Austin Museum of Art in October last year.  I’ve featured this slice of bread in my edible art entry and I used the method behind decorating this slice of toast in last week’s photo hunt.

My other photo hunt entry is HERE.  You can visit other photo hunters here.

Have a great weekend, y’all!

Odaku Sushi

May 30th, 2008

During one of our Japanese food cravings not too long ago, we decided to give a nearby Japanese restaurant a try.  The name of the place is Odaku Sushi and we always pass by it on our way to church.  Until that night we gave it a try, we thought it was just one of those fastfood type of sushi places, kinda like the Japanese counterpart of Panda Express.  We came upon this conclusion because it really doesn’t look much from the outside.  It wasn’t until we were parked outside that we realized it was actually a casual dining type of a place.  We proceeded to give it a try because we were already there anyway.

There weren’t very many people.  Only two tables were occupied and the place is actually of good size.  In my mind, I was already thinking, “uh-oh”. :)  The place was dimly lit, too dim for me really.  Well, I can’t blame them.  Interior decoration obviously isn’t one of the stronger points of this restaurant.  Take a look at this wall decor for instance…

See what I mean?  And I’m not a huge fan of plastic floral arrangements either, which they had lots of.  When they make more money, I hope they can give the place a make-over and perhaps think about using teak furniture.

Moving on to the food…  We ordered from the kids’ choices for Abby.  We picked the chicken yakitori and gyoza combo.  It has 2 sticks of yakitori and about 2 or 3 pcs. of gyoza.

chicken yakitori and gyoza (The other stick was already on Abby’s plate when I took this picture.)

The chicken was a little too tough and the gyoza could use a little less salt.  Abby didn’t like any of these one bit and ended up eating some of my food instead.

my chicken terriyaki meal

I ordered chicken terriyaki.  I was hopeful because it came in a really nice box. :)  But what can I say?  I’ve had better. :(  It was ok at best.  The terriyaki sauce makes or break a terriyaki dish.  And with a very good sauce, one can easily finish a bowl of rice sans chicken or any other meat.  That definitely isn’t the case with this one.  Sorry.

Hubby was the only one who was happy with his food.  He had cha soba…

hubby’s cha soba

One can do very little to turn these noodles into a disaster!  So this dish alone doesn’t give the place enough redemption points.  Hee hee!

For now, we’ve decided not to go back to this restaurant.  The only time we will is when we’ve already forgotten about our first visit. :)

Need a Lift?

May 30th, 2008

And I don’t mean a ride. :)  I’m referring to a Straddle Crane.  Well, this will be of more interest to architects, engineers and people in construction.  Shuttlelift makes straddle/gantry cranes and views them and all their products as lifting solutions.  They have been commited to making engineering innovations and customer driven improvements in their products, so much so that when it comes to equipment handling, they are preferred over their competitors.  Their products are backed up by rock-solid warranty, engineering expertise and wide application.  So if you need this kind of lift, check out Shuttlelift. :)

Yummy Stinky Durian :D

May 30th, 2008

I used to not like durian primarily because of its “unique odor”.  And there’s something about the texture of the fruit that I didn’t quite like.  My Mom has loved the fruit for as long as I remember.  I was already in my late 20s when I “saw the light”.  Hahaha.  I gave the fruit a taste and it was as if I tasted it for the first time.  It was creamy and tasted very good, too.  I’ve been a fan since.  In the Philippines, whenever we went to Tiendesitas, we make sure we buy durian for dessert after our meals.  We like durian ice cream, too!

I’m glad I found these pics from my archives.  These were taken in Malaysia in May 2005.  We just came from Genting Highlands and on the way back to Kuala Lumpur, we requested the driver of the van we rented to make a quick stop at this stall. :D

my sis-in-law, Claire and my Mom

I could’t join my sister-in-law, Claire, and my Mom in the durian feasting because Abby was sleeping in the van. But I made up for it when we got back to the hotel…

my date with a very “unsusual” comfort food ;)

Hotel guests are not allowed to bring durian into the hotel.  But the man we bought it from wrapped it really well that it didn’t smell at all.  Late that night, I snuck out to the balcony and feasted on the durian all by myself.  Yummy! :)

Worldwide Sports Event

May 29th, 2008

Have you ever heard of corporate hospitality? It is a concept that is so new to me.  It is one of the most acceptable and  effective  ways of creating and nurturing business relationships.  We are all aware of how rival companies compete to win new clients and retain old ones.  And most of the time, these companies try to outdo each other and that includeshow they pamper their clients.  In the UK for instance, Worldwide Sports Travel is one of the leading, if not the leading, corporate hospitality agents.  They specialize in providing corporate hospitality to major sporting events in the UK and overseas: tennis, golf, football, F1, etc.   They make sure that their clients are provided with the finest facilities, banqueting and tailored packages or simply accessing their worldwide ticketing and hotel service.   Truly, they are into high-quality client management!  Corporate hospitality is not purely about maintaining clients.  It is also a good way for companies to reward their employees.  It’s an excellent incentive for a job well done!  Whoever is at the receiving end of this corporate hospitality will surely feel important and cared for!  It would be wonderful if hubby’s company has such an incentive!  :D
