Web Development 101
Unlike my personal blog which is hosted for free, this site’s hosting is paid for. I’m really liking the freedom of having a self-hosted site. I can practically do anything I want with my site, from the design, to the plug-ins, etc. Then again, for someone who isn’t really well versed in web design and self hosting, it can be really intimidating at times. And there have been nights when my stress levels were high because something seemed to be wrong.
It’s good to know that there are sites, like Stylish Design that can serve as on-line reference material for people like me who are new to website development. Articles on the site are not limited to web development. There are very useful information on backup and recovery, SEO, page ranks, adwords, a number of “how to” articles, and so much more.
Between you and me, I’ve already bookmarked the site. ![]()

Indiana Jones M & Ms
A few nights ago, I was munching absentmindedly on some M & Ms, which had a packaging that was screaming Indiana Jones. I thought nothing of it and just went on my business popping the chocolate candy into my mouth one after another. And then hubby came to join Abby and me as we watched tv. He too started munching on the candies. After a while, he paused, and took a closer look at a piece of candy he was holding between his thumb and pointer finger. “Did you notice this?” he asked me. I just stared at him blankly, wondering what he was talking about. Then I, too, took a closer look at the candy and realized that it wasn’t the usual little “m” printed on it.

There’s nothing unusual with these candies. Or so I thought.
We dug into the bowl of candies wiht our pointer fingers as if looking for a hidden treasure. Hee hee. :) Then, we found another candy with a different print, and then another, and another. We found 5 different prints all in all. Lookey…

pyramids

Indiana Jones’ hats

skulls

twinkling Ms

Indiana Jones himself!
After I took photos of the different prints. The candies ended up here…

…toppings for a bowl of vanilla ice cream. :) Talk about sugar high!
Next time, I’ll take a good look at the food and other munchies that I pop in my mouth. Hahaha! ![]()

Distance Learning
Since our move to the US last year and my job title change to “stay-at-home-mom”, my dream of furthering my education came back to haunt tease me. I’m seriously considering Distance Learning . I don’t really want to attend classes in a regular school right now as putting my daughter in daycare isn’t really an option. I’ve heard of on-line degrees and thought that might be my best option.
When I mentioned this to my brother a few days ago, he was very encouraging and suggested I take a look at the website of Kaplan Open Learning. My brother used to be a safety instructor in one of Kaplan’s International locations in the Philippines. That would explain his loyalty to the school.
So I did visit the website to take a look. I was surprised to find out that Kaplan Open Learning and the University of Essex are working together to offer on-line Foundation Degrees to working adults. Kaplan Open Learning is actually the specialist UK online higher education division. The University of Essex, if you must know, happens to be one of UK’s leading academic institutions. It consistently ranks among the top 10 UK univerisities for the quality of its research and teaching.
The courses being offered are Business and Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Sales Management and Internet Marketing. I must admit, these all look attractive to me because after all, we are entrepreneurs back home running our own business. But while we are entrepreneurs, we never really had formal entrepreneurship education. After reading the course overview for entrepreneurship, I was almost convinced I needed it.
Then again, there’s Internet Marketing. Everyone’s on the internet and everybody wants to do business on the internet, us included. So this is also definetely a course worth considering.
Does distance learning mean I’ll be left to fend for myself 100% of the time? Fortunately, that won’t be the case. I learned that throughout the course, students will have a dedicated academic adviser. Students will also have the chance to interact among themselves and their tutor.
Now I see why more and more people are opting for Distance Learning . It is convenient, allows flexibility and a surefire way to start or enhance a career. I should definitely give myself some time to think this over.

East Meets West: Gwa Pao/Cuapao
I don’t know why it took me forever to discover these…

These are called Gwa Pao as stated on the pacakging, cuapao as we call it in the Philippines. Back home, I loved buying these in one of the stalls at Tiendesitas and they are sold with chopped homemade bacon as fillings at 3pcs. for 100 pesos. Ahhh, those were my pork eating days.
Anyway, these soft white steamed (unfilled) buns allowed me to come up with something new for Abby’s school lunch….

I used hotdogs for fillings. Hee hee! And she loved it! Normally, when Abby has the usual hotdog on a bun lunch, she will end up eating only the hotdog and the bun would find its way back to our home. :) The reverse happened this time. I prepared two cuapaos with hot dog fillings for Abby like so…

…and when she came home, both cuapaos were gone but there was still a little piece of hotdog left. Nevertheless, I was happy. These cuapaos, Abby and I will go a long way. I’ll just have to pair them up with Abby’s favorite fillings.
Another winning Mommy moment for me. Hee hee. ![]()
