Ultimate Paintball

May 16th, 2008

I was checking out a friend’s Multiply site and was very intrigued with the photos she uploaded of her and her husband clad in complete paintball regalia.  I have never played paintball before, but after seeing those photos, I thought it would be a lot of fun.  It’s an activity that is definitely way out of my comfort zone!  I casually mentioned to hubby that maybe we ought to give it a try with some of our friends sometime.  While we haven’t decided on an exact date yet, I thought I’d read up on it a little.  I ended up at the Ultimate Paintball site.  And wow, I didn’t realize the game was so, well, serious. :)

The equipment all sounded so alien to me: barrels, hoppers, tactical vests, etc.  For the certified paintball enthusiasts there are different gun packages to choose from.  I believe the most popular are the Tippmann A-5, Tippmann 98 Custom, Smart Parts Ion and Spyder Pilot ACS.  I’m kinda liking the spyder paintball  guns though, because they’re the most affordable, not that I’m planning on buying my own gun.  What I wouldn’t mind buying though are the casual apparel.  I just think it’s a little icky to be renting those.  Don’t you think so too?

Anyway, I’m looking forward to finally playing Paintball with hubby and our friends. I feel I’m gonna be good at it. Hee hee. ;)

Friday’s Feast One Hundred and Ninety-One

Appetizer

What is the nearest big city to your home?

That would be San Antonio which is about an hour and forty-five minute drive from where we live.

Soup

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how well do you keep secrets?

A 9.  Hee hee.  I can’t keep secrets from my husband and from my Mom…at least I’d like to think so.  :P

Salad

Describe your hair (color, texture, length).

I have shoulder length, straight black hair.  I have never colored my hair (EVER!) and haven’t permed it since I was 9.

Main Course

What kind of driver are you?  Courteous?  Aggressive?  Slow?

I’m a courteous, law-abiding, defensive driver.  Promise. ;)

Dessert

When was the last time you had a really bad week?

Fairly recently.  :D

The Stark Museum

May 16th, 2008

Even as a little girl, I have already been fascinated by museums.  It must have been the nerd in me.  And whenever my Mom and I travelled, we always try our best to get to know the country or city we are visiting by joining tours, which almost always includes a museum stop.

Unforunately, hubby doesn’t quite share the same fascination with museums.  Well, maybe it depends on what kind.  Now that I’ve given it some thought, we have so far visited only 2 museums in Texas, one in Austin and another one in San Antonio.   That’s a realy shame because Texas has plenty.

Four hours away from where we live is Orange, Texas, home of Stark Museum of Art.  It boasts of having fine collections of American Western Art.  In fact, it is considered as one of the most important in the US.  The museum started of as a vision of the mother and son tandem of Miriam Lutcher Stark and H.J. Lutcher Stark.  Both were passionate and eager collectors of art, furniture and decorative items around the world.  H.J. Stark was specially interested in nature and art depicting American west.  One other thing that mother and son shared was the dream of someday having a museum where their collections will be displayed.

The Stark Museum’s collections are divided into four:  Western Art, American Indian Art, Decorative Arts & Rare Books and Manuscripts.  The Western Art collection is a showcase of 19th to 20th century interpretation of the western region.  Objects created by members of the tribes of the Great Plains, Southwest, Eastern Woodlands, and Northwest Coast are displayed in the American Indian Art collection.  The Decorative Arts collection primarily showcases glass and porcelain, which includes the only complete set of “The United States in Crystal” from the Steuben Glass.  The Rare Books and Manuscripts collection’s prized publication is “The Birds of America” by John James Audubon and is regarded as one of the finest illustrated books of all time.

The museum was built by the Stark Foundation under the direction of H.J. Lutcher Stark’s wife, Nelda, after H.J.’s death in 1965.  The Stark Foundation was founded by husband and wife and it’s main objective was to enrich the quality of life in South East Texas through education and the arts.

When we find ourselves in Orange, Texas, The Stark Museum will definitely be in our list of places to visit.

PF #1: Fire

May 16th, 2008

This is Cafe Munchkin’s first Photo Friday entry.  This week’s theme is Fire.  The above photo was taken on New Year’s Day 2008 during dinner at The Tokyo Steak House and Sushi Bar with visiting relatives .  Nothing beats good food with a side of good entertainment. ;)

Web Hosting Rating

May 16th, 2008

It has been a month now since I started self-hosting this site.  I have to thank my friend, Thess, who graciously hosted this site for a few months and encouraged me that it’s not really that hard to get into self-hosting once you learn the ropes.  With that, another friend, Meeya, and I jumped into self-hosting.  It’s funny because both of us have no idea whatsoever about webhosting.  We don’t even have a clue of the difference between  windows web hosting and linux web hosting.  :)

Speaking for myself, I know that I am still very much a work in progress.  And as much as I can, I would like to learn more about the ins and outs of web hosting.  I’m glad that there’s a website like WHR (Web Hosting Rating) which has articles that tackle the different areas of webhosting, such as security issues, web hosting, control panels, and the list just goes on and on.  It’s pretty much like having your own tutor.  So, if you’re a clueless webhosting newbie like me or even if you’re not so clueless anymore and just want to learn some more, hop on over to WHR.  It’s worth the hop. :)

TMA #6: Happy Meal Time

May 16th, 2008

My dream happy meal would come in an LV monogram bag.  Hee hee.  Since I’d already be very happy with the bag, I’ll be very much contented with 2 pcs. of crispy fried chicken with gravy, a side of mashed potato (with gravy, too!) and iced tea.  A bar of chocolate would be nice for dessert.  And for my toy, I wo’t mind having my own PSP (hubby has his own already!).  Yum!  Like my Mom always says, it’s free to dream. ;)

That’s my answer to:

If you could create your own happy meal, what would it contain? Don’t limit yourself to fast food, and don’t forget to include a toy!

Hightech Map

May 16th, 2008

We made very good use of Google Maps and Mapquest the first six months of our stay here in the US.  We actually thought we can survive without a GPS.  Well, we were wrong.  I have to admit, the directions on these on-line maps can be quite confusing sometimes, what with words such as, “slight left” and “slight right”.  Hello?  On a trip to Sea World some time in December, a trip that should have only taken 1 hour and 45 minutes dragged far longer than it should have.  That’s when we decided we’ve had it with these on-line maps.  Since then, we’ve gone high tech.  We now have a GPS and we loooove it! ;)
