And just like that, Spring Break came to an end yesterday. Boo-hoo!
This past weekend was quite hectic for me. Poor time management skills in action yet again! I was requested to make two cakes for a back-to-back celebration – a boy’s 3rd birthday and a baby girl’s baptism – scheduled for lunch time on Saturday. Ideally, for a Saturday party, I bake the cakes the Thursday before (which I was able to do!) and decorate the cakes on Friday and Saturday. Because I spent most of Friday bonding with my family, I didn’t get around to decorating the cakes until early Friday evening. So yes, it was a Sleepless in Austin drama for yours truly. No complaints though! None whatsoever!
For this entry, I’m sharing with you one of the two products of that sleepless night, my first ever Baptism Cake. Weee!
This is an 8-inch Chocolate Chiffon Cake with Custard Filling. Purple is the motif. The baby shoes were modeled after the baby girl’s actual baptismal shoes.
This is where I start getting all defensive. It was my first time to make baby shoes out of gumpaste. Well, it’s actually fondant mixed with tylose powder…my new best friend. I have my soon-to-be pastry chef friend, V, to thank for introducing me to tylose powder. Thank you, V! I had fun making these shoes. I realize now that I probably took out the “forms” (read: paper towels!) I used to hold the shoes’ shape a little too early. Lesson learned! Still, I think the shoes came out decent looking. Please say you think so, too! Hee hee. :D
Overall, I’m very pleased with how this cake turned out. No cracks, no elephant skin look on the fondant, no tears. There are no imperfections hiding under those cut-out fondant flowers and purple border at the bottom of the cake, believe you me! :) So yes, I’m giddy with post-cake decorating excitement.
Have a great week ahead, y’all! Cheers and mabuhay!
