For a change, I was an eager spectator at a race yesterday, the Austin Statesman Capitol 10K. I was cheering, first and foremost, for my favorite runner in the whole wide world – hubby. *wink* I also cheered for a good friend and practically everyone who ran in front of me on the race course. I was yelling like a mad woman and I had so much fun. It was a warm morning, as if to tell everyone that the season for heated gloves is really over, at least here in Texas.

Tents with treats that ranged from flavored coconut water to reusable bags and post-race food awaited the runners at the open field in front of the Long Center. This was easily my favorite tent…

Why? Here, let me take you closer…

Chips galore! There were boxes and boxes of chips! Sea salt and vinegar was easily my favorite. My daughter’s, too! How can something sooo good be sooo bad for us?! It’s just not right.

Good news for everyone planning to run the Schlotzsky’s Bun Run on April 29. There’s a discount code that you can use to take $5 off your registration fee for the 5K or 10K distances: CAP10K. The code is valid until April 15 only. So take note and take advantage!

After yesterday, specially after hubby’s big personal triumph, I am feeling inspired. I’m excited to do my runs again. ;)

Cheers y’all!

Cream cheese was my most used ingredient between Feb 27 and March 7. I used it to make Strawberry Napoleones (February 27th) and Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Coffee Cake (March 6th). Hubby and I also snacked on crackers and cream cheese while watching tv one night. And because March 6th was meatless Friday, I made Tuna and Cream Cheese Maki for lunch.

This was a hit with both Hubby and my daughter, which didn’t come as a surprise. We just happen to love rice and nori and practically whatever filling they might come with…tuna or salmon, avocado, mango, cucumber, imitation crab, tamago, unagi, etc.

I’m happy to be able to roll my own maki. That translates to huge savings! A tray of skinny makis costs upwards of $5.00 at the supermarket. It’s more costly at a restaurant! If we had lunch at a maki joint, we could have easily spent $30.00! I’m definitely happy. :D

My daughter’s school lunch that Friday was tuna sandwich. I was left with a good amount of tuna spread in the fridge. That’s what I used to make the maki. I just paired it with cream cheese, which I have lots of! I was able to make 20 fat pieces of maki. That amount is not enough for us maki lovers, so I made an extra 10 pcs with just cream cheese. :D

I’ve now ran out of nori wrappers. I.have.to.buy.more!

Have a great week ahead, y’all! Cheers!

I’ve had these goodies since Monday last week but it was only last Friday that I finished attaching ribbons to them so I can hang them. They are all hanging around the Christmas tree now. I’ll post the pics some time this week. :)

My daughter’s been eyeing the Christmas tree and I can’t blame her. But she knows she can’t eat them just yet. I’m thinking she can enjoy them on New Year’s Day. :D

I used to believe that chocolates cause acne. But I read recently that it’s only a myth. I’m so relieved. You and I can enjoy munching on these goodies without worrying that they’ll interfere with acne treatment. Ho ho ho for that! :D

Just put a few spoonfulls of the creamy corn in a glass, add a little bit of sugar, fill the glass with shaved ice then pour some milk and voila! A simple and refreshing dessert or snack that you can enjoy at home. This is available in a lot of restaurants back home, but not as common in this part of the world, as far as I know! I’d say not even in vegas hotels! Abby loves Mais con Hielo and asks for it a lot now.

Champorado according to Wiki,

“is a sweet chocolate rice porridge in Filipino cuisine. It is traditionally made by boiling sticky/sweet rice and cocoa powder giving it a distinctly brown color. However, dry champorado mixes, which may be found in some Asian food stores, are prepared by adding just boiling water. It can be served hot or cold and with milk and sugar to taste. It is served usually at breakfast and sometimes together with dried fish locally known as tuyo. The pudding becomes very thick and the lighter milk helps to “loosen” it. It’s almost like eating “chocolate oatmeal.”

Don’t you just love Wikipedia? *wink*

I would love to make champorado the old-fashioned way but for now, I’ll settle for the champorado mix. (Oh please don’t crucify me for that!)

I can have it hot or cold, for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.

Back home, we use evaporated milk with the champorado. But here, we’ve been using whole milk instead.

On our way home from Abby’s gym class (or from anywhere for that matter), we always pass by Tropical Smoothie Cafe, which is just a stone’s throw away from where we live. Abby asked me to buy her a smoothie. I proposed to just make her some at home. Thankfully, she agreed.

I originally planned on making a banana smoothie. I didn’t realize, however, that my bananas are no longer any good. Fortunately, I still have one lonely piece of mango. Since mangoes here are huge, I was able to make enough smoothies for hubby, Abby and me.

I served Abby’s in one of her rocket ship cups (from Denny’s) and Hubby’s in a regular glass, not in a champagne glass. Hee hee!

To make, just throw in the mango slices, sugar (according to your desired sweetness), crushed ice and milk in a blender and blend for a few seconds. Voila! You just got yourself a serving of fruit and milk (and sugar, too!)! Slurp! Slurp! ;)

“You’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky; As we eat the foods of gold.” Hee hee. Sorry, Sting! I just had to borrow these two lines from one of your hit songs.

This week’s Lasang Pinoy, Sundays’ theme is “Fried/Golden”. Let’s face it, a lot of the best tasting, tummy tickling, finger-licking foods out there are the ones which are fried to a golden brown. Why? I don’t know really. Sad as it may seem, but there’s something about greasy, sinful food that just appeals to everyone who couldn’t care less about calories, fats and slimp pants. And that includes this blogger. Hee hee.

Here are some homemade goldies…

Breaded Pork Chop (I used a storebought breading mix for this one!)

Here are golden food treasures from fastfoods and restaurants…

Mixed Tempura

It’s a good thing that I’m still much too full to be craving any of the above listed food. That might not be the case a few hours from now. Hee hee hee.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, y’all!

Those are the exact words on the box of treats we got straight from Japan. I always get excited whenever we get goodies, and I mean food goodies, from the Land of the Rising Sun. For one, they are packaged ever so nicely. Second and most importantly, they taste really good. My last entry about Japanese treat was Japanese Nut Squares. Boy were those not squares soooo good.

Anyway, back to the Premium Excellent Chocolat. Here’s the box…

Here are the silver treasures that lay so neatly inside.

These words printed on the silver foil got me excited and raised my expectations to Everest proportions: “special chocolate with noble sweetness”. I tried to keep my heart from beating too fast and lifted one silver package and opened it.

So I took the treat out of the foil. I was surprised to find a cookie! But…but…the box said “Premium Excellent Chocolat”! Where’s the chocolat?!!!!

This has got to be a joke, I thought to myself. That very thin line of brown was all the chocolate there was.

I took a bite. Naturally, I could barely taste the chocolate. What a let down! The cookie turned crumbly and powdery in my mouth after I took a bite. So not what I expected. My Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies are way more excellently premium than these! Or are my tastebuds just too used to sweetness of diabetic proportions? I say no. Hubby and I felt we were tricked. Oh well. Let me just bury my sorrows in a jar of Nutella. Kidding. If it’s any consolation, the cookie grows on you. Hee hee.
