La.Pi.S. #9: Red

August 18th, 2008

Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits.  I have a rather weird way of eating them, something I got from my Mom.  I dip them in powdered milk mixed with a little bit of sugar. :)  Sometimes, I go by the more acceptable way of eating them, which is with whipped cream.  Ooh, and how about dipping strawberries in chocolate, like in a chocolate fountain or chocolate fondue?  Ooh-la-la!  Well, I haven’t really done that here at home.  Although, I saw this chocolate fountain thingy at Party City!  Hmmm, maybe I ought to get one for a more stylish way of snacking on strawberries.  Or would that be too much?  Hee hee. :D

La.Pi.S. #8: Crunchy Chips

August 10th, 2008

The first thing that comes to mind when talking about crunchy food is chips, which has got to be on everyone’s list of comfort food.  Sinful?  Yes.  Comforting?  You bet!  ;)

Hubby’s favorite…potato chips.

Abby’s and my favorite…Cheetos “Crunchy”.

Our favorite TexMex appetizer…Tortilla Chips. :)

There’s still a host of other crunchy goodies that I simply love.  One would be chicharon (Lapid’s Freshly Popped!).  Another would be balat ng litson.  Hee hee. ;)  How about Nestle Crunch chocolate bars?  Oooh, I like ‘em, too! ;)

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  May you have a wonderful week ahead!  Cheers! :)

La.Pi.S. #7: Birthday

August 3rd, 2008

There are three things that I would consider as birthday staples, among Filipinos at least…pancit (noodles), ice cream and cake.  One of these three, if not all three, will always make it to a birthday feast, no matter how intimate.

This is Abby’s 1st birthday cake…

Cake by Dexter’s Bakeshop

This is MY 30th birthday cake, prepared for me by the then Westin Philippine Plaza…

Chocolate cake squares, a Bailey’s dessert and a glass of champagne.  How can I complain?!

And these are Hubby’s birthday treats last year prepared by Tokyo Steakhouse…

Ice cream and mini cakes

I just love birthdays!  :D

La.Pi.S. #7: Porridge with Century Egg

July 31st, 2008

The theme for week #7 of Lasang Pinoy, Sundays is “Soup”.  I love soup, but I’m a bit partial to one that is already a meal in itself, like noodle soup and porridge (or congee as it is commonly referred to in the Philippines).

Last Sunday, we had dinner at TC Noodle House and I realized it’s been ages since I’ve had congee.  I thought I ought to give it a try.  I ordered something really simple, but something I’ve always liked:  Porridge with Centruy Egg (Hundred Year Old egg is what it’s called here)…

I had very high expectations because we like TC Noodle House and their food.  But, the porridge, while OK, wasn’t exactly what I had hoped it would be.  It was bordering on bland.  I’m used to tastier, well-seasoned ones from Chinese restaurants in the Philippines.  This porridge reminded me of lugaw (Filipino term for porridge) that my Nanay (maternal grandma) would make for my Lolo (grandfather) when he’s sick.  I had to use lots of soy sauce!  And the century egg?!  They were cut into very small pieces!  I doubt if they even used a whole egg for the porridge.  Hmp!

After everything I’ve said, I still haven’t decided if I’ll have porridge in that place again.  Seafood porridge next time perhaps?  We’ll see.  You’ll definitely hear read about it when it happens.

La.Pi.S. #6: Soft

July 29th, 2008

Not only are these soft, they’re totally cute, too in their pink, blue and white, star-shaped glory!  Marshamallow!

As a little girl, I’ve always loved marshamallows.  They’re the only reason I would eat a rocky-road ice cream (I love chocolate but not the peanuts!  No peanuts in my ice cream please!).  I’m crazy over choco-mallow cookies.  And what about smores?  *drools*   Oh, oh, oh, how about mallows and a chocolate fondue or a chocolate fountain.  Ahhh.  It’s unbelievable how I can make myself drool.  Hee hee.  ;)

La.Pi.S. #5: Sour

July 29th, 2008

Lasang Pinoy Sundays is actually on week #7 already but that won’t stop me from posting my entry for the weeks I missed when I went on vacation - week #5 (sour) and week #6 (soft).  I’ll post separate entries for each.

Here’s my take on sour…

…freshly squeezed lemonadate with a strawberry twist.  I purposely ordered this drink for La.Pi.S. when we had lunch at Mighty Fine last week.  I’ll post an entry about Mighty Fine in the coming days. :)

One down, two more La.Pi.S. entries to go. ;)

La.Pi.S. #4: Summer Drinks

July 6th, 2008

I didn’t want to do any more recycling of photos for this week’s Lasang Pinoy.  I originally planned on making a banana smoothie because I have bananas in the freezer waiting so desperately to be used.  However, it’s the July 4th (long) weekend here in the US.  That meant our restless and certified Pinoy feet were out of the house for most of the time throughout the three-day weekend.  So no banana smoothies.  Hee hee. :D

I decided to just take a pic of my drink for lunch earlier today, which, I dare say, is one of the more popular drinks anywhere…Iced Tea…

Coming from the Philippines, iced tea for me means the overly sweet “Nestea”.  But after a year of living in the US, my tastebuds have already gotten accustomed to unsweetened iced tea.  I sweeten it, of course!  Hee hee. :)  Don’t you think iced tea is so versatile?  It’s a beverage one can drink anytime:  lunch, dinner, midmorning & midafternoon snacks, picnic at the park, outing at the beach, watching dvds at home while relaxing in one’s home theater furniture, etcetera, etcetera. :)

Between iced tea and fresh fruit juices, my vote will always go to fresh fruit juices.  We’re lucky that watermelons, honeydews and cantaloupes are quite abundant here.  And they’re sweet, too!  Too bad I can’t say the same about the mangoes.  I miss my Philippine mangoes! :(

With that, I raise my glass of iced tea.  Cheers!
